TEFL questions people ask most
What is TEFL?
TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. It is training, and a certificate, for teaching English to people whose first language is not English, usually in a country where English is not the main language or online. A TEFL course covers teaching methods, grammar for teachers, pronunciation, lesson planning and classroom management.
Is a 120-hour TEFL enough?
For most entry-level jobs, yes. 120 hours is widely treated as the international baseline for paid English teaching abroad and online. Some employers prefer longer courses or a course with observed teaching practice, so a Diploma or adding a specialisation can help you stand out.
How much does a TEFL course cost?
At London College of Teachers the 120-hour TEFL Certificate costs US$185, £160 or ₹14,750 including GST. Higher levels cost more: Diploma US$275, Advanced Diploma US$390, PG Diploma US$510 and Master in TEFL US$645. Specialist courses (Young Learners, Business English, Phonetics) are US$130 each.
Do I need a degree for TEFL?
Not for the course itself: the Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma are open without a degree. However, many countries' work visas and many employers ask for a bachelor's degree, so check the requirements of the country where you want to teach.
Is a TEFL certificate recognised internationally?
TEFL certificates of 120 hours or more from credible providers are widely accepted by language schools and online platforms around the world. Recognition is decided by each employer and country, so confirm requirements with the employer or authority before you apply.
How much do TEFL teachers earn?
Pay varies widely by country. Published ranges suggest roughly US$1,000–2,000 a month in much of Southeast Asia and China, US$1,800–3,000 in South Korea and Japan, and US$2,000 or more in the Gulf, where housing is often included. Online rates range from a few dollars an hour to much more for experienced specialist tutors.
