Studying online and assessment: questions and answers
How long the course takes, how online study and assessment work, tutor support and teaching practice. Below are 11 questions people ask Google and AI assistants, each answered directly in a few sentences.
How long does a TEFL course take?
The 120-hour Certificate is designed for up to 4 months, the 150-hour Diploma 5 months, the 250-hour Advanced Diploma 9 months, the 350-hour PG Diploma 14 months and the 480-hour Master in TEFL 16 months. Specialist courses take 4 to 6 months. These are maximum study periods, and fast-track is available on the higher levels.
How does the online TEFL course work?
You apply online, an adviser explains the course and issues your login, and you study each module online at your own pace. Each module ends with multiple-choice questions or assignments; higher levels add lesson plans, projects or case studies and a final assignment. You get your certificate after successful completion.
How is the TEFL course assessed?
Each module has multiple-choice questions, and the answer key is emailed to you so you can review your work. Higher-level courses add projects, lesson plans or case studies that tutors grade, plus a final assignment.
Is there an exam at the end?
There is no single sit-down exam. Assessment is continuous: module quizzes plus graded assignments and a final assignment at higher levels.
Does the course include teaching practice?
Teaching practice is optional. London College of Teachers encourages learners, especially those who have never taught, to arrange practice with a local school or institute and provides a recommendation letter for the internship.
What teaching method does the course use?
The courses use Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), which gets learners using English in meaningful conversation and practice rather than only memorising rules.
Will I get tutor support?
Yes. Learners get tutor and coordinator support during the course, and the Diploma level and above include access to a senior mentor with more than 35 years of ESL experience.
Can I download the course material?
Learners report being able to download the chapter PDFs for later reference. Confirm the current format with admissions when you enrol.
What happens if I fail a module?
Module quizzes come with an answer key so you can review and correct your understanding. If a graded assignment does not meet the standard, your tutor gives feedback; ask admissions about resubmission rules for your level.
Can I study TEFL on my phone?
The course is online, so you can read modules on a phone or tablet. A laptop is easier for writing lesson plans and assignments.
How many hours a week should I study?
Around 6 to 8 hours a week finishes the 120-hour Certificate in about 4 months. Studying more each week finishes it sooner; the course is self-paced.
